Calingae -  Video Art Workshop

April 20, 2016 I Utsha Foundation For Contemporary Art, VR-39, Bhubaneswar, Odisha

Artist: Himanshu Desai

'CALINGAE' was a collaborative video art workshop, conducted by artist and curator Himanshu Desai as a part of the Utsha Artists' Residency, April 2016. His proposed title of the video workshop - 'CALINGAE'-was the name given to the region of Kalinga in a book entitled 'Indika' by Megasthenes, a Greek explorer and ethnographer who travelled India around the 2-3rd century BC.

During the 5-day event, participants shot small bits of footage on their own, which were edited into a single collaborative video work. All participants were assigned specific tasks to shoot and edit their given inputs into a single narrative. A final video was edited and screened for a wider audience during the residency open day on April 26 at 7.30 pm.

Video art came into being in the 1960s with artists experimenting with the use of video and /or audio data as a medium of expression. It can take many forms including broadcast recordings, installations and performances. The advancement of technology has expanded the boundaries of video art tremendously. Now mobile phones, such as the iPhone, have given access to many users to shoot high definition videos allowing even more experimentation opportunities to artists.

With a first of its kind workshop in Odisha on video art, Utsha Foundation intended to introduce Odia artists to a new medium of expression in a collaborative setting. The workshop was supported by MGM Foundation and Objects d' Art who hope to promote a new wave of creative expression in contemporary art in Odisha.
