Art Education RoundTable 2019

August 09, 2019. Mother’s Public School, Bhubaneswar, Odisha.

Art Education Roundtables 2019 plan to address the state of art education in India. Arts occupy a marginal position in the academic system, especially at the school level, where all efforts are made to push the child towards Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. The lack of creative activities has led to an under-productive and restrictive education system which hampers the child’s curiosity, creativity and imaginative capabilities. Thus, these roundtables hope to bring together experts from various fields such as arts, cinema, performance, literature, academia, policy making, pedagogy to address this crisis and to plan for a better education system that integrates the arts.

AERs are designed as interactive discussions where three experts will share their opinions and experiences, and the audience will get ample time to put forward their valuable views, opinions and concerns. These insights will help in developing a vision for the future of art education. AER has already been successfully held in Delhi (March), Kolkata (April), Baroda (May) and Chennai (June), and will travel to 3 more cities -Bhubaneswar, Mumbai and Guwahati, and will end with the Annual Seminar on Art Education 2019 in Delhi in the month of December.

Conceptualised and organised by Art1st Foundation, AER 2019 is a series of roundtables on arts pedagogy that will bring together experts from the fields of art history, art criticism, curation, pedagogy, film making, literature, activism, policy making, performing arts and education.

These roundtables held across the country will lead to an annual seminar in Delhi held in the memory of noted artist and pedagogue, Tushar Joag, who passed away in 2018. The AER takes its inspiration from Tushar's passionate advocacy for art education as an integral part in the holistic development of children and youth.
