Residency Open Day – Muskaan Singh.

January 28, 2019 I Utsha Foundation of Contemporary Art, UNIT 6, VR-39, Bhubaneswar, Odisha.

Muskaan is acutely aware of the rules of the social framework of caste and property and tries to represent the effects of such pressures through juxtaposed narratives. She thinks about resistance to and circumvention of these norms. Muskaan says that humour and the vernacular idiom are her means to discuss complex political situations. She uses references specific to her village and culture to express socio-cultural encounters and political experience in contemporary life. Muskaan always takes narrative as a metaphor to talk about human psychology where it traces her personal psyche too. Her work talks about ecology. A process which she sees as poetry in between silkworm and Shahtoot leaf, transformation of human condition and shelter of life, visibility of dark. It is also a womb which represents the protection, life and death and shift of new time. She also referred to her idea through the poetry itself. She is continuously exploring the psychological aspect of process and product too which comes from different resources in her work. As culture, politics and surrounding She belongs too and the moment She is in, so the residency space also creates a huge influence in her work and the material used.
