Winter Reels 2018

January 07, 2018. Utsha Foundation of Contemporary Art, VR-39, Bhubaneswar, Odisha

Winter Reels is an initiative by Utsha to create a bridge between art history and cinema. Cinema is a medium which amalgamates many other art forms. This set of movies talked about the journey of pre-modern art in Europe. Through movies and documentaries, we attempted to draw attention to the socio-political and historical background, philosophy and nature of art practice during this period. The movies will chronologically be covering Romanticism, Realism, Impressionism and Post Impressionism phase in European art history.

The movies like Goya’s Ghost (2006), Mr. Turner (2014), Loving Vincent (2017) dealt with particular artists of the mentioned periods along with their lives and works as well as the social reaction on the artists and their philosophy. These movies not only deal with the correct information but also suggest a fine sense of movie making.

Intricacies of Realism

In this slot we will be screened five short movies which plotted the intricate details of the pre - modern art movement called realism. The first movie was an introduction of realism. The second movie was on Industrial Revolution, depicting the socio- political background of this art movement.
